White Poppies Study By Jean Fehl

First Painting
I like to paint white flowers on a background of white paint that has been padded with a silk and fired to a cone 016. This prevents the glaze of the china from showing through on the white flowers.
The poppies were then sketched in with a dark green and the shadows on the petals painted very lightly with dark red and dark green compliments mixed in the brush.
Highlights were then wiped back to keep the whiteness of the flowers.
The centers were painted with yellow and orange (Yellow Brown #2).
The green leaves and stems were sketched in and painted with light greens.
The outer rim was painted with black green.
The piece was then fired to cone 016.
Second Painting
For the second painting I added depth of color, using brown green and black green mixed in the brush.
I also added shadow shapes of the dark red and dark green mixed in the brush.
Next the leaves were darkened and the flowers strengthened with the dark green, as needed.
The centers were strengthened with the orange color.
The piece was fired again at cone 016.
Third Painting
On the third painting I experimented with some washes of light colors, wiping back highlights to retain the whiteness of the flowers and then darkened areas of the painting as needed. I try on a third painting to not overwork the design by over painting.
